Hometown of James Braid, 5 times Open champion and well-known golf course designer, golf has been played here officially since 1589, and the golf club Elie and Earlsferry was founded in 1832.
It changed name to Golf House Club after the club house was completed in 1875 and Old Tom Morris stretched it to 18 holes in 1895 and it’s not really changed since then. It’s a quirky course, starting right from the blind 1st tee, there’s an old periscope in the starter’s hut that you must use to check there isn’t anyone in the way! With 16 par 4’s and 2 par 3’s you might be worried that it would be short and boring but with 6 holes that are over 400 yards and the wind from the sea it’s nothing of the sort.
On a clear day you can see right across the bay to Gullane and North Berwick, but it would take you 2 hours to drive there!
