Playing Royal County Down is an experience you will never forget! Currently the 4th best Golf Course in the world, it’s a marathon not a sprint.
Royal County Down is currently listed as the 4th best course in the world, and once you’ve played it, you’ll be in no doubt that it thoroughly deserves it!
South of Belfast, in a little town called Newcastle, a Scottish school teacher was adamant that there should be a local links course for the locals, and in 1889 the first 9 holes were opened. The year after Old Tom Morris was hired to extend the course and it is he that deserves most of the credit for this much admired golf course.
The rugged and rolling terrain with purple heather on top of the sand dunes creates naturally undulating fairways that leads to fairly small, often well protected greens. A long course, at nearly 7200 yards from the back tees, and a number of blind shots ensures that Royal County Down is definitely a marathon and not a sprint, where it’s more important to shoot straight than far, and where patience and tactics truly pay off.
