Royal Liverpool Hoylake has had the open 12 times and in 2022 it’s time again!
Royal Liverpool, or Hoylake as it’s known locally, was founded in 1869 and is therefore the 2nd oldest club in England. It has been tinkered with several times since then, latest was in 2009/2010 when Martin Hawtree oversaw the installation of a new green on the 17th, the reduction of bunkers to a mere 82…and the installation of a new irrigation system.
The course has since then been in much better condition as it used to suffer badly during heavy rainfall. The 1st is a somewhat scary dogleg, as it swerves round the practise area, which is out of bounds. It’s followed by a few fairly uneventful holes but once you reach the 8th it feels more like a traditional seaside course. This is a very welcoming club that we recommend you visit!
